Why capable students still struggle with university maths
Struggling with a first or second-year maths module doesn't mean you're not capable of the degree. It's usually a mismatch between how the material is taught and what you actually need to understand it. Lectures move at a fixed pace for a room of 30+ students, problem classes are often too short to work through where you personally get stuck, and unlike school, there's rarely anyone checking whether last week's gap has been closed before this week's lecture builds on top of it. Gaps compound quickly, and by the time exams or coursework deadlines arrive, it can feel like there's too much to fix at once. In practice, it almost never is: it's usually two or three specific sticking points repeated across different topics.
What we cover
- Calculus: limits, differentiation and integration techniques, multivariable calculus, partial derivatives, series and Taylor expansions
- Linear algebra: matrices, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, vector spaces, linear transformations
- Mechanics: kinematics, dynamics, work and energy, rigid body motion
- Statistics & probability: distributions, hypothesis testing, regression, statistical modelling
- Mathematical modelling & optimisation: formulating and solving applied problems, nonlinear differential equations
- Real analysis: rigorous limits, continuity and convergence, proof-based foundations
- Financial mathematics: mathematics of markets, stochastic processes, Markov chains
- Engineering maths modules: the applied maths content that sits alongside engineering, physics and computer science degrees
This covers the core first and second-year content plus a good number of more advanced second and third-year modules. Course names vary a lot between universities even when the content is very similar, so if your module isn't listed above, it's still worth asking.

How sessions work
Sessions are built around your actual coursework, problem sheets and past papers rather than a generic syllabus. We start with where you're stuck, work through the reasoning together, and then practise similar problems until the method is genuinely yours rather than something you followed along with. For resit and fast-track preparation, we can work through a full module's syllabus in a concentrated block of sessions rather than spread over a full term.
Available online or in person in Manchester. Weekday daytime slots are generally reserved for university and fast-track A-Level students, which tends to suit term-time and exam-period scheduling better than evening-only availability.
